Guj govt likely to bring fresh notification on Jaswant’s book

Gujarat home department is likely to come out with a fresh notification giving reasons for banning the book in the state.

Following the Gujarat High Court order, which set aside the Modi government’s ban on Jaswant Singh’s book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah on Friday, the state home department is likely to come out with a fresh notification giving reasons for banning the book in the state.

“The High Court has set aside the notification issued by the state government on technical grounds saying the notification failed to give reasons as to why the book should be banned here,” said Jaynarayan Vyas, state government spokesperson.

“The order of the High Court does not take away the right of the state to come out with a fresh notification if the state so desires,” Vyas said, adding, the government has accepted the technical defects in the notification.

Indicating that a fresh notification may be issued for continuing the ban on the book,Vyas said “we will study the High Court order on the matter and then take a decision on the issue. A fresh notification giving detailed reasons and explanations regarding why the book should be banned here in the state is also under consideration.”

The official also defended the government’s stand saying the government was right in judging the feelings of the people regarding the ban on the book.

Vyas claimed that there is a consensus across party line on the issue in the state.
