A delirious crowd, mostly young, broke through tin and bamboo barricades for a closer look at Narendra Modi, who cashed in on their enthusiasm by asking Nitish Kumar to “take notice” of the public surge in favour of the NDA.
Police resorted to a mild lathi-charge but had to retreat after slippers, chairs and expletives were hurled at them. Calm was restored only when Modi took the mike and greeted the crowd in the local Magahi dialect, “Magadh ke logan sab ke koti koti pranam”.
As the crowd cheered, he said: “Those who accuse me of sitting in a closed room … I request them to look at Gaya’s Gandhi Maidan. Such a public reaction is not for any individual or party but this wave seems to have announced the results.” He went on to pose questions and seek ‘yes’ or ‘no’ responses from the public. “I have to ask you thrice because some people pretend not to have heard this roar,” he said.
Modi referred to last year’s blasts in Bodh Gaya and slammed the government’s “inept handling of the probe”. Then he asked who can deal sternly with terrorism. And the young crowd chanted, “Har har Modi, ghar ghar Modi.”
