Congress dissolves UP unit, begins party overhaul

State party chief Nirmal Khatri to stay till his successor is announced

The Congress on Tuesday set in motion a comprehensive overhaul of the organisation. It dissolved the state unit in Uttar Pradesh, where the party suffered a severe setback losing all but two of the 22 seats it had won in 2009. The only two who won from the state were Congress president Sonia Gandhi and second-in-command Rahul Gandhi.

All state, district and block committees of the party in UP stand dissolved, party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said. State Congress president Nirmal Khatri — who too lost from from Faizabad — will continue till his successor is announced. He was made president in August 2012.

The Congress had a few days ago disbanded the executive committees, district and block level committees of its units in Delhi and Haryana, but left the state chiefs untouched as both Ashok Tanwar in Haryana and Arvinder Singh Lovely in Delhi were appointed only recently.

Sources said a comprehensive overhaul of the organisation is on the cards and many of the general secretaries could be changed fixing accountability for the crushing defeat. Madhusudan Mistry, considered a close lieutenant of Rahul, was in charge of Uttar Pradesh till he was declared as the Congress candidate from Vadodara against Narendra Modi.

Both Rahul and Sonia have been meeting party workers to get their feedback on why the party fared so badly in the Lok Sabha election. Sonia has already been authorised by the Congress Working Committee to effect the changes needed to revitalise the organisation. Sources said the next in line could be the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh units, which have young state unit presidents.
