It was a night when the ex-wife conquered the world, the underdog film defeated the biggest film ever, and when technology bowed to that thing known as the good old story.
Heres a list of my Oscar moments:
Ladies Special: While Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win a statuette for directing in the Oscars’ 82-year history,Sandra Bullock also achieved something historic. The Blind Side winner became the first actress ever to win an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year. She was unapologetic: “The Oscar and the Razzie are going to sit side by side. As they should,” she said.
Whats Up Clooney: Hes the man with the crinkled eyes, the hearty laugh and the best quips in the business but it seemed George Clooney had left his good mood somewhere Up In The Air. He hardly smiled, grudgingly clapped and seemed to be watching some other show in his head. Did lady-love Elisabetta Canali give him an earful because he stepped on her gown?
Quip of the Day: “I want to thank the Academy for not considering Navi a foreign language”,said Argentine director Juan Jose Campanella, after winning the award for best foreign language film for El Secreto de Sus Ojos (The Secret In Their Eyes).
The best part of the show: Robert Downey Jr and Tina Fey. They displayed perfect comic timing and chemistry. The Academy should book them as next years hosts as well!
It Must Hurt: Twelve years ago James Cameron had declared,”I’m the King of the World”,post his Oscars win for Titanic. This time, his ex-wife became the ‘Queen of the World’. And while he sportingly clapped for Kathryn Bigelow, the Academys massive outpouring of love for The Hurt Locker must have hurt Cameron, more so since he didnt make it to the stage even once. Thats something even reality television cant come up with!
The Oprah Touch: Oprah Winfreys introduction on the Precious lead Gabourey Sidibe was word wizardry at its best. Like writer-director John August tweeted,”I want Oprah to say nice things about me. She can even make a death row prisoner feel awesome.”
Big Blooper: How in the world did the Academy miss out on Farah Fawcett in the In Memorium segment is still a mystery. This one left many reeling. Film critic Roger Ebert tweeted,”No Farrah in the memorial. They have a whole lot of ‘splaining to do.”
Fangirl Moment: Quentin Tarantino and Pedro Almodovar in one frame. Heaven.
Tweens Taketh Over: The Academy went all out to hook the kids. Getting Miley,Zac,Taylor and Kristen was a strategic move sure to translate into ratings. Now if only someone would teach K Stu how to stand straight and not mumble. Grow up already.
