APROPOS Akhileshs decision (IE,July 30),Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadavs sensitive and prompt action in replacing a vandalised Mayawati statue with another one saved the state from potential violence and unrest. It also sent the message that political adversaries are not enemies. UP is still not free of political crimes but the chief ministers swift damage control measure has sent out the right signals. Senior politicians should not hesitate to follow his example.

THIS refers to Akhileshs decision. The attack on a Mayawati statue could have created a serious law and order problem in the state. However,UP CM Akhilesh Yadav showed political maturity in dealing with it. It sent the message that such acts of vandalism would not be tolerated. However bitter the relationship between the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party may be,such incidents need to be handled tactfully.

Blood runs thicker
A DNA test of senior Congress leader N.D. Tiwari has finally proved that the former Uttarakhand chief minister is actually the father of Rohit Shekhar (DNA results out,Tiwari fathered Rohit,IE,July 28). Shekhars long search for his biological father has finally ended. The politician can no longer refuse to own up to being the biological father.

Old wounds
THIS refers to Hang me if found guilty,Modi tells Urdu weekly (IE,July 27). It has been more than a decade since the Gujarat tragedy occurred. However, detractors of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi refuse to believe his repeated assertions that he called in the army to control the situation. They seem bent on keeping memories of the tragedy fresh, even if it leads to further communal unrest. Gujarat has prospered since 2002 and all communities seem to have flourished under Modis development agenda. As the CM pointed out, sentencing has taken place in 50 cases and still continues. This has not happened in any other major riot in the country, including the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. However,a curious silence surrounds them.

Playing judge
TEAM ANNA member Sanjay Singhs calling Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi a murderer of humanity is deplorable (Anna begins fast, team targets Modi,IE,July 30). It shows the way in which members of Team Anna have resorted to loose talk just to get attention. This threatens to derail Hazares movement, which should
focus on corruption. It is not for Team Anna but for the courts of law to pass
judgment on Modi.
