War hero
* In 1971,under the orders of Indira Gandhi,Bangladesh, then East Pakistan, was liberated from West Pakistan and the operational commander was Lieutenant-General (retd) J.F.R. Jacob of the Indian Army. He deserves the high honour bestowed on him by the Bangladesh government (In nod to India role in liberation,Bangla to honour Lt Gen Jacob,IE,March 12). Better late than never.

Swear and tear
* Apropos RSVP dharma (IE,March 14),the Congresss scrutiny of the invitees for swearing-in ceremonies showcases nothing but its insecurity over its allies. Mamata Banerjee or anyone else should be free to attend the swearing-in ceremonies of Parkash Singh Badal and Akhilesh Yadav. There is no doubt that more often than not she acts like a rival than an ally of the Congress. But the Congress does not have any right to stop her on the pretext of coalition dharma.

More of the same
* Many suggest that the politics in Uttar Pradesh has changed. But to me it seems more of the same. In 2007 Mayawati won because the Samajwadi Party had failed to address the problems of the people; in 2012 SP has won because Mayawati failed to do the same. And even in the SP,you see the beginnings of a dynasty which is unfortunate for Indian politics. If not the father, then the son. It is just a continuation of what has happened in the Akali Dal and the Congress. We need democracy, not dynasty rule.

Wall of fame
* Apropos the editorial Rahul Dravid (IE,March 10),he has retired gracefully from cricket at the right time. He is a gentleman to the core and his career spanning 16 years is unblemished. He is the Wall who never crumbled. He stood like a rock on the crease, kept wickets and fielded brilliantly. He will be an inspiration for generations to come.

* When Sourav Ganguly scored his maiden hundred at Lords, there was someone else who played equally well, though he got only 95. When V.V.S. Laxman made light work of Australian attack in Kolkata, there was someone else who may not have been as stylish but was just as effective. Before Sachin Tendulkar and Ganguly destroyed English attack at Headingley, someone else had scored one of the all-time best hundreds overseas. But Adelaide 2003! That was well and truly his moment, when he steered India home with a brilliant double hundred and a match-winning 50. That was Rahul Dravid. In an era when sledging is more or less accepted,he is someone for whom playing aggressive cricket meant letting the willow do the talking. He will be missed.
