Small change

This refers to the report ‘Manmohan rings in the old’ and the editorial ‘Discard a few’ (IE,January 20). You have rightly highlighted the flawed character of the reshuffle. It was mere “cosmetic tinkering” as the government “did not take the crisis of accountability and governance seriously”. When UPA 2 took over, minus the Left, even a layman hoped that things would finally move. And,that Dr Singh would assert his authority as the captain of the team for “mid-course correction”. But,unfortunately, all promises proved elusive.

The UPA hurtled from one crisis to another. The editorial aptly noted that the cabinet reshuffle “fools nobody”. It has hardly any core design or theme. In effect,it continues the unending drift. There is no long-talked-about youthful entry to infuse energy. Non-performers have been rewarded. Some discarded ones have been brought back.

Oath of secrecy

The editorial ‘Discard a few’ has hit the nail on the head by saying that “the crisis the UPA faces requires not just reshuffling, but discards”. The token changes affected by the prime minister in his council of ministers do not show who is the boss, nor do they indicate that he is serious to take on crony capitalism and other problems afflicting his government.

Instead of giving inefficient and controversial ministers their cards,he has held his cards close to his chest for the future. This policy of letting things ride does not remove the common perception that the UPA government is dithering on a slippery slope,if not displaying a death wish.

This refers to the report ‘SC questions Govt secrecy, says black money loot of nation’ (IE,January 20). The public understands that the executive and the judiciary have to work in unison, playing watchdogs to the national interest. Neither exists to safeguard the interests of a few at the cost of the entire nation. They should not seem to be at loggerheads.

Dress code

I strongly reject the decision by khap panchayats to prohibit girls from wearing jeans (‘Khap panchayat bars girls from wearing jeans,’ IE,January 16). This is unacceptable in a free country. The reasons stated are absurd. How can someone expect a mere ban to curtail eloping of young couples? It is high time these khaps realised their illogical acts will not solve any problem, and that they woke to the changing world around.
