Slanging match

The first day of the monsoon session showed that in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the scene remained dismal as usual (‘“Illegitimate” remark rocks LS on day 1’,IE,August 9). Unwarranted adjournments again proved that parliamentarians have no respect for the chair and waste time that is meant for sensible discussions. Our MPs must understand that it is not the power of their lungs that should be on display, but the power of their brain and heart, which will take the nation forward. — Brij B. Goyal,Ludhiana

APROPOS ‘Look who’s dialling’ (IE,August 9),the UPA government’s proposal to provide every BPL family with a mobile phone seems to be guided solely by electoral politics. Every party is looking at the 2014 general elections. Doling out goodies should be out of the question, when the economy is in dire straits. The government should enable the people to have the wherewithal to pay for their needs, instead of giving freebies for its own selfish end — coming back to power. The dead hand of our populist policies will only weaken the economy.

APROPOS ‘Look who’s dialling’,the UPA’s BPL phone scheme exposes how this government is remote from the people. When people are asking for drinking water, the government is offering them cellphones. Judging from the history of pilferage in such schemes, one wonders how many people will actually get the phones.

AFTER reading the earlier articles by Markandey Katju,I was of the view that he was not among the 90 per cent he wrote about. But his latest article (‘India,in transition and corrupt’,IE,August 8) is proof that he is not aware of the character of Indians. They have been enslaved for centuries and nothing is going to change in Katju’s stipulated 15-20 years.

Identity crisis

It has been suggested that the hate crime in Wisconsin could be a case of mistaken identity. While no one should be victimised on the basis of their religion, the Sikhs abroad must put extra effort to communicate to the people in the neighbourhood that wearing turbans do not make them Taliban.

Justice denied

THIS refers to ‘“Massage parlour” in Apna Ghar had cops, politicians as clients’ (IE,August 1). The CBI has filed its first chargesheet against the accused. Girls who were inmates of the state-run shelter home were allegedly sexually assaulted/ harassed. The offenders should be brought to justice at the earliest.
