Prem Sagar Malhotra, 75, and his wife Asha, 65, died of suffocation after an LPG cylinder fire broke out in their Shahdara home on Wednesday.
An elderly couple suffocated to death after a fire broke out at their house in Shahdara Wednesday afternoon, the Delhi Police said.
According to the police, the incident happened in the Shiv Puri area of Shahdara. Bystanders who noticed fumes coming from the first floor of the building made a PCR call to the Jagatpuri Police Station at about 1.36 pm.
“Thereafter, the staff reached D-38, Gali No 5, Hazara Park,” a police officer said.
The police said two fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and a man, Prem Sagar Malhotra, 75, and his wife, Asha Malhotra, 65, were found unconscious inside the first-floor house.
“They were rescued from the house and sent to GTB Hospital in an unconscious state. Both were declared brought dead at the hospital,” the officer said.
The police claim that the fire broke out after an LPG cylinder burst in the building, which spread over about 50 square yards. The couple suffocated as they couldn’t get out of the home in time.
The police said Kumar was alone in his house when the cylinder burst. When his wife arrived, she rushed in to help him, but the couple got stuck in the flat.
