Short sighted

* This refers to ‘Maoists making urban bases: Shinde’ (IE,May 31). The Union home minister’s excuse for extending his stay in the US was thoughtless. Despite being kept in the loop about the brutal massacre of his fellow party members by the Maoists,he preferred to stay back. He ought to have taken tips from the British prime minister, who instantly returned to London when he learnt of the Woolwich killing.

* THIS refers to ‘Gaining on Naxals’ (IE,May 31). It is correct that we must draw up long-term plans to take on the deadly attacks from Naxals. Haphazard deployment of security forces, with some drones and helicopters, does not help. The CRPF must be organised properly. They should be available in sufficient numbers, fully equipped and well trained in order to eradicate the insurgency and terrorism. After clearing the Naxals, development work may be accelerated and genuine grievances of the marginalised and poor tribals addressed without delay.

Minor scam

* THIS refers to ‘For Punjab Akali MLAs library book procurement scam “a minor issue’’’ (IE,May 31). This is a shameful incident. Instead of having the scam and illegalities probed by the CBI,Chief Minister Badal has appointed a retired judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, someone who is personally known to the education minister,to conduct the probe. The investigation will be a farce, the concerned minister will get a clean chit and the helpless committee members will be blamed and punished for the sins committed by the education minister himself.

* ’INDIRA model,Rahul mould’ (IE,May 31) raises some relevant questions on Rahul Gandhi’s role. As an MP from UP and the vice president of the Congress,Rahul holds no official position in the UPA government. In what capacity and under what authority did he attack the chief secretary of the Chattisgarh government? Was he right to reprimand the senior-most bureaucrat of the state? Let Rahul Gandhi be tough on his wayward Congressmen; he does not yet have the authority to read strictures to government officials.

* SACHIN TENDULKAR stated that he is shocked and disappointed because of the spot-fixing and betting scandal and that the faith of millions of cricket fans all over the country has to be restored in the game. This is in contrast to Dhoni, who was silent on the issue during his press conference, even though the media asked him many tough questions. I strongly feel that Dhoni should learn a lesson from Sachin Tendulkar. He must come out and speak about the fixing scam.
