Saritha Rai’s ‘Ministry of scandals’ (IE,September 21) confirms that Karnataka is getting out of hand as far as corruption goes. While some ministers had quit because of personal scandal like charges of rape, corruption and recruitment irregularities, the Reddy brothers are still a law unto themselves. They challenge the governor, the Lokayukta and anyone who questions their overlordship of Bellary. One minister threatens suicide if he is dropped from the cabinet, and 20 MLAs threaten to resign in that event. This is blackmail of the worst kind, and should not be tolerated.

Earning our stripes

The dwindling of wildlife populations, especially the tiger,is a matter of great concern. At this rate of depletion,it will take only a decade for tigers to vanish from the wild. In India, the most recent audit of wild tigers placed their number at a mere 1,411. It’s the government’s duty to intervene and institute the best practices for tiger reserves and also build capacity in wildlife crime control.

None of this will succeed unless incentives for not killing wildlife exceed the gains of killing. Whistle-blowers must be rewarded for telling on poachers. Humankind will suffer a great loss if this magnificent species is destroyed.

Decide either way

Apropos ‘Delhi goes to Srinagar — then tries to go the extra mile’ (IE,September 21),the three accompanying photographs shame the dignity of the Indian state. Our leaders virtually begged for peace in Kashmir, from those who refused to go to the all-party delegation and who don’t recognise the Indian Constitution or Parliament. The government seems to treat these separatists as the arbiters of Kashmir’s fate. The UPA must decide whether or not it stands by Parliament’s decision on Kashmir.

Let calm prevail

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court is slated to deliver its verdict on the Ayodhya title suits on September 24. Tension is running high. Let us hope that saner counsel will prevail and both communities will be able to exercise restraint and maintain peace.

With Kashmir on the boil and the Centre’s plate of woes full,it will be prudent for all Indians to remain calm so that the Centre can devote its time and attention to Kashmir and other urgent matters of the state. It is heartening to know that Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, has alerted the police and appealed to all sections of society to maintain peace.
