Saying little

* Apropos the editorial ‘Breaking the silence’ (IE,June 30),the prime minister’s meeting with senior editors was an exercise in rationalisation of his government’s failures. On major issues like corruption, inflation, tax evasion and black money,he preferred to be non-specific,except that he postponed the inflation-check to the next year. His contention that he is not a lame-duck PM sounds unsure when he has to announce at every press conference that he’s ever ready to vacate the chair. It’s good that he spoke, but unfortunately,he didn’t say much. .

* This refers to the prime minister’s statement that he is not a lame-duck PM. Tell me,is there any prime minister who would say that he is a lame duck? Manmohan Singh is not a directly elected member of Parliament. He’s a member of Rajya Sabha. He doesn’t have a mass following. He owes his prime ministership entirely to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

An economist first

* The PM’s press meet was a calculated endeavour to woo the media. But it hasn’t yielded any significant outcome except promises, assurances and some statements. Meeting editors is an innovation by the UPA to give a message that they have got to play their instrumental role in the name of the common man for another three years. The PM emphasising often that he’s not a lame-duck prime minister reflects his identity crisis.

Commendable job

* BJP chief,Nitin Gadkari, criticised the PM for his failure to check corruption and prevent price rise, despite being an economist by profession (‘PM met to justify failure: BJP’,IE,June 30). The fact is that the PM’s meeting with the media was a very appropriate thing to do. In fact,he was being criticised for not being visible enough and not holding press conferences to explain his government’s stand. In his meeting with the editors, the PM did a commendable job. He did clarify a number of points as to mistakes made, his government’s limitations with regard to enacting a law as demanded by the civil society activists, his authority allegedly being undermined, etc.

Acts of destruction

* This refers to the editorial ‘Burnt paper’ (IE,July 1). It’s astonishing that the Gujrat government has destroyed all records pertaining to the period of the 2002 riots because of the general practice of destroying all records after a certain number of years! This act is unlikely to have been a “casual” one. The Narendra Modi government in throwing dust in the eyes of the investigating agencies and the nation. He must be taken to task by the law of the land, with no excuses for his being the chief minister.
