Safety drills

* Japan is in the midst of a nuclear crisis. But that shouldn’t mean curtains for nuclear power. It’s not the time to panic or take knee-jerk decisions, but to learn our lessons. The prime minister rightly ordered taking stock of the safety of our nuclear plants. We need stringent guidelines for the generation of nuclear power. For new plants,we should have the best technology. These plants should be located away from high seismic zones. We also need regular safety drills. Once a crisis is over,we tend to become complacent.

* The opposition in Parliament treats WikiLeaks as a gospel truth, only to destabilise the government. Although I am really surprised to hear Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s comment that a matter related to the 14th Lok Sabha could not be raised in the 15th,just as I disagree with the BJP trying to wash off the blood of the riots after its victory in the next Gujarat assembly election. Manmohan Singh’s resignation,as demanded by the BJP,will not solve the problem.

* This refers to the prime minister’s reply in Parliament on the WikiLeaks controversy regarding cash for votes. On one hand,he said that the contents of the WikiLeaks disclosures are unverifiable. On the other,he said no bribe was paid to any MP. Without verification of the contents how can it be said for certain that no bribe was paid? The PM’s reply is unconvincing.

Tennis ace

* Somdev Devvarman deserves a big applause for his high-quality game in the fourth round of the ATP Masters l000 tournament against Rafael Nadal (‘Somdev loses but wins hearts’,IE,March 17). Although the scoreline was 7-5,6-4,Somdev shone in defeat. At ATP rank 84,Somdev put up a great challenge to No 1 Nadal, and commanded a standing ovation. Even Nadal acknowledged it when the two shook hands. It was a measure of Somdev’s game that for the first time he reached the fourth round in the ATP World Tour after beating higher ranked players like Marcos Baghdatis. He broke Nadal’s first game in the first set that lasted over an hour and served more aces than the champion.

Driving school

* A budding life has come to a sudden end because of the sheer foolishness of another (‘Learning to drive, woman runs over 14-year-old’,IE,March 18). In the first place, learning to drive should be compulsorily at authorised driving schools. This helps the candidate to both acquire driving skills and respect safety standards. Saving a little money by avoiding the driving school can turn out to be very dear indeed. In this country, there are laws for most things, but the levels of awareness, compliance and enforcement are extremely poor.
