Reaction,action

The silly manner in which the Indian government got itself embroiled in the Norway affair only reflects a larger malaise that permeates our society. We jump to judgements without thinking; we react instantly, emotionally and in deafening volume to any issue — the ban on the Bhagavad Gita in some obscure town in Russia, the perceived insults to our so-called “honour” by Jay Leno, the hysteria over Salman Rushdie attending the Jaipur Literature Festival. News TV,in particular, plays a stellar role in whipping up public sentiment on issues that are either trivial or require deeper thought.

Power of 19

APROPOS the editorial ‘19 MPs kill a Budget’ (IE,March 23),you have rightly analysed the UPA’s humiliation by a leader of 19 MPs. Ordinary citizens are befuddled as to why the prime minister has allowed himself to be relegated to the position of a mute spectator instead of standing firm that a new minister cannot undo what his predecessor from his own party had just done. This will only encourage further mutinies from Mamata Banerjee.

Mamata Banerjee has managed to inflict a big damage on a majestic national institution with her 19 MPs. Her government in West Bengal plans to lift the state’s economy through massive infrastructure projects at huge costs. With a big debt burden, this appears distant. The rebel in her may come in the way of the state’s economic progress. Her notions on politics and economics are all mixed up.

Defunct politics

I endorse the editorial ‘Doormat’ (IE,March 20). The pressure of running a defunct state like West Bengal is showing in Mamata Banerjee’s political conduct. The people of Bengal had hoped she would bring cheer to their lives which she has been promising for years. The PM has submitted to her blackmail many times, including the present one. It’s time the Congress looked for support from other parties and stopped wooing Mamata if they want to continue till 2014.

THE thrilling end to the Asia Cup final was worth watching. The performance of the now seasoned Bangladesh team was excellent throughout the series. Even though Pakistan won the tournament, the team that actually won our hearts was Bangladesh.

Under pressure

IT’S unfortunate the UPA government succumbed to DMK’s pressure and voted against Sri Lanka on the UN resolution. Taking advantage of the strained relations between India and Sri Lanka,China is sure to spread its influence in the Indian Ocean.
