Re value

In the wake of the eurozone crisis, investors, who are parking their money, consider the dollar safer than the euro,at least for the short term. Meanwhile, investor confidence in India has eroded. Gone is the era of RBI intervention to prop up the rupee. What we need is capable governance and the determination to carry through urgent reforms. The political class must spare some attention to the economy.

Zero work

The editorial ‘Answer time’ (IE,November 25) rightly points to the importance of Question Hour. Ever since the winter session began, the House has been adjourned every single day. This only means that precious time and money have been wasted. There are over 30 pending bills to be discussed. But in the slanging match between the opposition and treasury benches, there is no scope for any discussion. Dear MPs,should you be wasting more time, refusing to discuss vital issues?

26/11

On November 26,2008,a few gunmen took siege of Mumbai. The city saw terror and bloodshed. Over 150 people, including foreigners and policemen, were killed. Even after three years have passed, the scars of that tragedy remain. Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist caught by Tukaram Omble,is still to be hanged. Unfortunately we have been periodically reminded of these disruptive forces — by the German Bakery blast in Pune on February 13,2010,and the Mumbai blast on July 13 this year. Concerted efforts are needed to contain terrorism. In the meanwhile, let us keep the spirit of courage alive and pay homage to martyrs.

Dam it

The Tamil Nadu government’s decision to ban the film Dam 999 goes against the right to freedom of expression. Even if the movie — which the filmmakers say is based on a disaster in China in 1975 — carries resonances of the controversy over the Mullaperiyar dam, what purpose would a ban serve? A solution to the problem has to be found by the two states involved,Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and in the real world. Efforts should be directed towards that, not in gimmicky moves like banning a movie.

Cairo’s reminder

It is unfortunate that the Arab Spring, which bloomed in Tahrir Square and which resulted in the fall of Hosni Mubarak,is still fragile (‘Springing a reminder’,IE,November 23). In the second phase of the revolution in the square, public anger is focused on the new ruler — Field Marshal Tantawi. Cairo’s fears are valid: that as long as the army controls the levers of power, democracy will not flourish.
