• A deadline for retreat is in fact an admission of defeat. One wonders how the commander-in-chief of the sole superpower could be so unimaginative as to tell his adversaries that all they need to do is wait in their hideouts till the US and NATO forces leave. However,I would disagree with the articles post-exit scenario: the chances of the US winning the war are low as this is not merely a war of superior weapons but one of ideology. The US did win the war against the Taliban eight years ago, ousting them from power. But look at how that played out.
Perhaps the only option for India is to be on its own and not lean on the US. India needs to build up its defence capacity for its regional challenges.

• Shekhar Guptas His Af,our Pak is an insightful look into the role of the US in Afghanistan and Pakistan,as also its effect on India and Afghanistan should Obama stick to his 18-month timeline. It is however unlikely that the proposed withdrawal will take place. Its unfortunate that India suffers due to Pakistans internal problems. Further, the suggestion that we should engage with its democratic establishment, with all its imperfections, speaks volumes about our helplessness. How long can we rush to the worlds super cop to come to our rescue? Its time to take a holistic view of ground realities.

Climate talk
• The editorial A time for numbers has rightly stated that climate change is no longer going to be a non-issue in the Indian polity. Indian policy-makers must understand the climate change policy dynamics on the global stage and react promptly. However,India cannot afford to spend millions on tackling climate change when larger economies continue to ignore international norms. Perhaps Indian policy-makers ought to learn a trick or two from their Chinese counterparts how to give something and take a lot in return.

• Developed countries are responsible for the present critical state of global warming. But unbridled emissions from developing nations can also damage the climate and cause global warming. Moderation of greenhouse gases is one thing, but for the citizens of every state the primary concern should be the preservation of the eco-system around them. We should not be silent spectators to ecological destruction by pollution from industrial wastes, spurious by-products of chemical plants and drinking water down-gradation.
