The Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association (CPWA) Sunday opposed the Karnataka government’s plan to construct a skating rink within Bal Bhavan premises inside Cubbon Park in Bengaluru.

Recently, the Jawahar Bal Bhavan Society in association with the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES) mooted a plan to build a skating rink on half acre of land at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore.

S Umesh, President, CPWA, said a skating rink was entirely unnecessary in Cubbon Park. “A high-quality skating rink already exists at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium, situated just across the road from Cubbon Park. Constructing a second rink within the lung space of the city is a redundant use of resources that offers no additional public benefit while causing significant environmental harm,” he added.

“For years, Cubbon Park has faced the creeping threat of urbanisation. The CPWA views this latest proposal as another step towards the systematic concretisation of one of Bengaluru’s last remaining green bastions. Every square metre of concrete laid is a square metre of earth lost to the city’s ecosystem. Cubbon Park is not a playground for civil engineering projects; it is an ecological hotspot that serves as a vital carbon sink and a sanctuary for local flora and fauna,” the CPWA president further said.

The CPWA has demanded that the government withdraw the proposal and also commit to a total ban on any new concrete structure within Cubbon Park.
