Power of N
* The editorial A clearer orbit (IE,April 28) acknowledges the importance of nuclear power. For a fast-growing economy like India, nuclear energy is the need of the hour. We need to educate people on its advantages but we should not in anyway compromise on the safety aspect. We need to learn the right lessons from Fukushima and stop the politicisation of nuclear projects which create only panic and derail developmental projects. An independent and autonomous body is a step in the right direction.

Credibility at stake
* There is no reason for the Congress to gloat over the support of the BSP and the Samajwadi Party in opposing the PAC report on the 2G spectrum scam. They would have doubtlessly extracted their pound of flesh to fall in line. The Congresss declining credibility has plummeted further with this episode.

Wrong turn
* CPM leader Anil Basus remarks about Mamata Banerjee have been condemned by one and all (Marxist Misogyny,IE,April 25). Making derogatory remarks about women politicians, and then following it up with an apology, has become all too common. A few months ago,Mulayam Singh Yadav said that if the Womens Reservation Bill was passed,it would lead to catcalls and whistles from men. Self-made women politicians like Mamata Banerjee,J. Jayalalithaa and Mayawati have often been demeaned by their political rivals. Banerjee could not have shaken the foundation of a 34-year-old Left dispensation only on the strength of her mercurial temper. Such comments are not only unbecoming of a democracy, but also unfit for a civilised society

We the people
* One sees the strength of a democracy in the number of people coming out to vote. Contrary to the apprehensions of those who are losing faith in the system of democracy, over 80 per cent voters turned up in the ongoing West Bengal assembly elections (WB polls: Quiet yet enthusiastic,IE,April 28). The same was true of the recently held panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir. It is a reaffirmation of the peoples faith in the system and their power to bring change through ballot.

Foreign hands
* As a coach Gary Kirsten did a fantastic job,but it doesnt mean that we should always look for foreign coaches (From Ashes to hottest seat: Duncan Fletcher is new India coach,IE,April 28). We have enough cricketers at home who are in a position to help our team. Duncan Fletcher will be in charge of a team that is on the top of the world. Keeping it there will be a herculean task.
