Poor leader

* ‘The states strike back’ (IE,March 24),by Shekhar Gupta, touches upon almost every issue that has hit UPA 2. This government will survive until the 2014 general elections, but only until then. The Congress party, far from being reform-minded,has faltered at simple politics and coalition engagement. It was grossly incompetent even at playing politics. Its attitude has made sure it cannot be confident of cooperation from allies or opposition parties — be it the issue of Teesta river water sharing, the NCTC,GST implementation or FDI in retail. It’s time UPA 2 realised that battles are not fought and won with sheer arrogance and dynastic history. One has to have an inclusive and holistic approach in matters of national importance.

* This refers to ‘The states strike back’ (IE,March 24): Shekhar Gupta touches the right chord when he says the Centre is clueless because it fails to see and respect the ongoing power shift to the states. The federal structure of the Indian polity inherently calls for coordination and cooperation between the states and the Centre. However, the present strained relations between the opposition-ruled states and the Union government betray those constitutional intentions. Economic reform and growth-oriented policies at the national level cannot succeed without the support of all concerned. It requires the UPA 2 government not differentiate between states where the Congress and allies are in power and those governed by the opposition.

Let him be

* Apropos ‘Bangalore limbo’ (IE,March 26),you are quite right in pointing out that the present chief minister of Karnataka will not be able to perform with the perpetual fear of B.S. Yeddyurappa hanging over him. By all accounts,he has been doing a good job since he took over in August. The BJP bosses must ensure the status quo is maintained in the interest of the state.

Slog overs?

* Sachin Tendulkar has merely expressed his desire to play on until his interest in cricket wanes. He has not even remotely demanded or suggested that he be included in the team for as long as he desires. This issue is bound to attract some interest, but this empty controversy should not be prolonged.

* It is good to see that after scoring his 100th hundred,Sachin Tendulkar is keen on continuing playing in all formats of the game and has dismissed talk of retirement. The 100th century has relieved him of the pressure he was under. Now his fans will be keenly following his performance,to see how he contributes to victories for India.
