Plane truths

It is good to know that politics is not determining the purchase of fighter aircraft from abroad. The government has given the sole responsibility to the Indian Air Force to decide what is best for the defence of the nation. The European fighters were effective in the 1950s and 1960s when Hunters were purchased from Britain and Toofanis from France. Then in the late-1960s and early-1970s,Russian MiGs were bought, but handling them required great skill. Now,we must finalise the deal swiftly to arm the Indian Air Force with the latest technology.

Sense and censor

With reference to ‘Dare to be prissy’ (IE,May 6),I cannot help but wonder if the purely representational medium of cinema can genuinely impose or attack patriarchy. The article makes several retrograde assumptions before laying out its arguments. It mentions item numbers as being derogatory towards women but doesn’t mention the innumerable ways in which women in Indian cinema depict submission. Such stereotypes reinforce a more enduring exploitation as it is accompanied by the weight of normative structures and traditional morality, something which item numbers do not possess and thus become easy targets for purveyors of sexual prudishness. Censorship itself fulfills patriarchy’s agenda of shackling female sexual

expression.

In ‘Dare to be prissy’,the author rightly argues that Munnis and Sheelas do not define women’s liberation. On the contrary, they seek to perpetuate the well-entrenched patriarchial system which turns a woman into an object or commodity. It may be okay to do that in movies that are properly rated for an adult audience, but to bombard such cheap and tasteless humour on everyone is in bad taste.

Pocket the money

It was well known that Pakistan has been grossly misappropriating US aid. Pakistani rulers have repeatedly misled the US about the utilisation of their aid, despite India’s repeated notices. Surprisingly, the US,with its entire intelligence network, continued to be taken for a ride by Pakistan. However,US lawmakers seem to have at last realised the duplicity of Pakistani rulers.

Your editorial ‘Dada’s back’ (IE,May 5) appropriately states that it is still premature to write Ganguly off. Even though we have won the World Cup under M.S. Dhoni, the resurgence of the current Indian team began under Ganguly. He was not only instrumental in bringing players like Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh into the team, but his aggressive style of leadership also brought in the much-needed confidence and a desire to win. He might not be in the best of form, but he still has the potential to guide his team to win.
