Peace in our time
*This refers to The big thaw (IE,September 25). This is a historic moment for the US and Iran. The warming of their relationship witnessed at the United Nations General Assembly is going to be hard to forget. An understanding between the two nations,on Irans nuclear programme will greatly ease the situation in the Middle East. Its time for US President Barack Obama to grab this opportunity to reach out and restart business relations with Iran. Obama will be feted by posterity, similar to the way in which Ronald Reagan is celebrated for de-escalating the tense US-USSR relations through the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Lifting trade sanctions against Iran will also help energy-starved Asian countries, including India. This seems to be
the season of peace given how the Syrian crisis is also being attempted to be solved peacefully.

*This refers to RBI says fee on debit card usage not permissible (IE,September 26). The RBIs recent decision to prohibit zero interest rate schemes is an excellent move. Earlier,it had asked banks to desist from 80:20 lending schemes,in a bid to shield consumers from unscrupulous builders. By doing away with dodgy housing loan schemes, the RBI is attempting to reduce the escalating non-performing assets in banks books. Zero interest rate schemes were tricking unwary consumers through pumped-up processing fees. By declaring fees on debit
card usage to be impermissible, the RBI has yet again shown that it is ready to defend consumer rights.

*The RBI has rightly singled out the unfair trade practices followed by bankers and consumer durable companies and taken a dim view of the same. Its common knowledge that the availability of consumer products at zero interest lures people to spend on things they cant afford. People are routinely misled,by being made to believe they do not have to pay any interest. Little do they realise that they have to pay through their noses on processing fees. The RBI has done good by putting an end to this deception.

Divisive politics
*This refers to The other militancy (IE,September 26). It is sad that politicians worldover still pitch one community against another. Be it Shias against Sunnis in Pakistan or Jats against Muslims in Muzaffarnagar. Even the West isnt immune to hate politics. European anti-immigration politics and American race politics are notoriously divisive. There is a dire need to bring ethics and probity back into public life. We must make politics less murky. We must give peace a chance.
