The editorial Pawar failure (IE,February 9) rightly cautioned the UPA government on Sharad Pawars shenanigans. Pawars meeting with Bal Thackeray when Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has already assured full protection to all IPL cricketers was intriguing and unwarranted. Perhaps Pawar is trying to raise the sagging spirits of Thackeray,to use the latters services in return to fulfil his own political ambitions in the state or at the Centre. Thackeray is vulnerable and dejected now,and hence easy to manipulate. Pawar is indulging in skulduggery. But he shouldnt do it at the cost of the Union government of which he is an important minister.

Sugar-free
In the dock for the sugar price fiasco and with the Central cabinet not looking too pleased with him,Sharad Pawar just walked over to the Shiv Sena to buy for himself a little political insurance. With the fate of so many colleagues in jeopardy,Pawar is willing to pay a premium to Balasaheb, the first instalment starting with this bailout of the Sena image, after the local train had so innocuously ferried Rahul Gandhi across suburban Mumbai. You can always trust Pawar to be innovative, and go back to your cup of tea without sugar.

Talking terror
Baffling political pundits and India-Pakistan watchers,India has taken the initiative to invite Pakistan to talks. However,as usual, despite the fact that for long Pakistan had been asking for a composite dialogue, presently,it is feverishly engaged in an exercise to kill the Indian initiative. First,Pakistans enthusiasm has been tepid. Second,Pakistan insists that the offer is under diplomatic pressure from the US,that India lacks sincerity in resolving outstanding issues (that is,Kashmir). Its foreign office says there can be no progress in talks unless J&K tops the agenda. Third, though Pakistan claims that it itself is a victim of terrorism,it is not prepared to accord terror priority in talks. Under these conditions,it appears well nigh impossible to talk to this ever intransigent neighbour.

Poor show
The Indian cricket teams tame surrender to the South Africans on home turf,at Nagpur,is a matter of concern. Our boys played like tigers against minnows Bangladesh, but turned paper tigers against stronger opponents,as the South African bowlers made our batsman dance to their tune after their own batsmen had scored a mammoth total. Perhaps our players are more interested in T-20 cricket than Test matches due to the money they receive in the IPL. This will kill Test cricket in the future. Our cricket board too is greedy, and responsible for this humiliation. Otherwise, why would they promote a T-20 format so strongly at the expense of Tests?
