Ode to Dravid

* When we needed a wicketkeeper-batsman,Rahul Dravid readily became one. When we needed to shield our dashing batsmen from the new ball,he became the wall. When they wanted to bat at the top,Dravid finished the job. When, one fine day,we said his legs were too old for shorter formats of cricket,he gracefully accepted. When everyone else failed in England,we called upon Dravid and he again took up the bat.

* This refers to ‘Tiger always’ (IE,September 23). There are so many credits to Tiger Pataudi. He not only won India’s first ever Test series overseas and inculcated fearlessness in the team but also nurtured and mentored our most famous spin quartet of Bishen Singh Bedi,E.A.S. Prasanna,B.S. Chandrasekhar and S. Venkataraghavan, who later won many matches for India. His fielding standards were very high and earned the sobriquet “Tiger” for his flexibility and agility, and that too at a time when there was not much emphasis on this aspect of the game. Last but not least,if he could do all that with only one normal eye,it speaks volumes for his talent and class.

* Indian cricket should thank M.A.K. Pataudi for five reasons. First,he set an example by fielding brilliantly and expected the same from his teammates. Second,he faced fast-bowling without fear. Before his time,

Indian batsmen were known to buckle under pace. Third,he could lead the side despite its deficiencies, such as the lack of good opening batsmen or bowlers, and instil confidence in the team. Fourth,he put a premium on fitness and commitment and led by example. Finally,he conducted himself impeccably. He overcame a severe handicap and let his actions speak.

* Sachin Tendulkar’s suggestion to change the ODI cricket format shouldn’t be dismissed by ICC chief Haroon Lorgat. Has he ever heard of making a good thing better and keeping up with changing times? ICC should experiment with the suggested changes scientifically to offset the advantage of the toss and weather. It should be followed by player and viewer surveys.

* This pertains to ‘Redefining the poor’ (IE,September 22). The current affidavit, which is going to be a benchmark for identifying the poor, outright neglects the current economic environment. I wish these policy-makers would take up a challenge and spend a day on the meagre amount of Rs 32 in urban areas.
