interest. Still,by not making a forceful articulation of moral support to the democratic forces embroiled in a struggle against a brutal dictator,India has stopped itself from crossing the threshold to the stage of international politics. France and Britain have espoused a moral obligation to aid the cause of a democratic struggle and have even led the US into this intervention. While India will never have a say in the strategy or the outcome of the deployment in Libya as these Western powers will,we must make it clear that we support those fighting for their freedom.

The West should not interfere in Libya or in any of the countries in the Middle East and North Africa; instead it should let the home-grown winds of democracy assume hailstorm proportions and drive out dictatorial rulers, like it happened in Tunisia first and then Egypt. Why is the West impatient? If Libya needs some more time, then so be it.

He who walks

This refers to ‘To walk or not to walk? Debate on’ (IE,March 22). That Sachin Tendulkar is one of the greatest sportsmen was proved once again when he walked to the pavilion despite being given not out in the match against the West Indies. Although many argue that it could have even cost India the match,it was an act of top-order sportsmanship, seldom seen in this age of tough competition. Sportsmen around the world should take a leaf out of this.

Apropos ‘To walk or not to walk? Debate on’,cricket was indeed the gentleman’s game. Not only was “walking” the norm when a batsman knew he was out,but a fielder would also reverse a “caught” decision by indicating that the ball had touched the ground. All this changed when Kerry Packer turned cricket into pure business. No wonder,Ricky Ponting is comfortable with “no walking”.

Pre-poll jitters

Finally, the Trinamool and the Congress have sorted out their seat-sharing problem (‘Mamata has her way,Cong says yes to just one more’

(IE,March 22). A shrewd politician like Mamata Banerjee should be fully aware that if the Trinamool goes it alone,it has more to lose than the Congress does. When both the parties claim to be the saviour of West Bengal, which has been suffering the Left Front’s misrule for over three decades, why did they take so long to come to

an agreement?
