Opinion Nix quick fixes
I agree with Shekhar Guptas view that the civil societys version of an all-powerful Lokpal displays an arrogant, authoritarian and elitist streak that is not suitable for Indian politics.
Nix quick fixes
* I agree with Shekhar Guptas view (Our Singapore fantasy,IE,June 25) that the civil societys version of an all-powerful Lokpal displays an arrogant, authoritarian and elitist streak that is not suitable for Indian politics. However,we do need to root out corruption and inefficiency from our system. While quick fixes and extra-democratic and extra-constitutional suggestions and solutions should be rejected outright, the patience of the public should not breed complacency among the leadership.

Draft duty
* I agree with Kapil Sibal (Sibal says no more civil society in drafting laws,IE,June 27) that there is no need to involve a few select members of the so-called civil society to draft legislation in future. Parliamentarians are elected by us precisely to do their work of governance and legislation. Any consultation,if required, should be broad-based and representative. If the elected government fails in its duty, there are appropriate measures to redress the problem both at the judicial and the political levels. In the interests of safeguarding the principles of democracy,we must not presume to do what is the job of the government. All we can do is vote responsibly, interact constantly and be proactive in expressing opinions and reservations.

Jokes apart
* This refers to These streets are her own (IE,June 24). Any protest with a serious concern should be organised and conducted in a manner exhibiting its earnestness. Atrocities on women are neither funny nor can be treated in a casual manner. The subject is important and all efforts should be made to keep the slightest element of sarcasm away from it.

Essential oil
* It is a fallacious argument that the latest fuel hike was an instance when good economics triumphed over politics. Our economy has slowed down and it is unlikely that we will be able to meet the fiscal deficit target. These have been topped with inflationary pressures that are too high for the common mans comfort. The government just does not seem to understand the problems of millions of ordinary families.

Open up
* This refers to the editorial Closing the door (IE,June 25). I endorse your view that RTI exemptions should ideally be case-specific; an entire category should not be exempted. Of late, there have been several attempts on the part of various departments and agencies to stay away from public scrutiny. The RTI Act has been a great achievement and it goes without saying that any effort to circumvent its provisions on flimsy grounds would defeat its purpose. That would reduce it to the Right to Limited Information Act.
