Move on

* Shekhar Gupta has in the past also suggested some powerful and simple solutions (‘Decide on the Doctor’,IE,October 1). But as simple solutions like communication don’t get addressed, the problems get more complicated and severe. It’s all perception management, and following the leader. But there’s no real leader at the moment. I wonder whether any of the problems would be as exaggerated if an effective leader had taken control before it became a larger issue — like the way Sheila Dikshit managed the CWG scam. Everything at the moment is getting magnified, and it’s almost as if,if you peek a little below, there are no real issues. We need to just move on and get going. But who is listening?

Innings defeat

* I loved Shekhar Gupta’s ‘Decide on the Doctor’ and the cricketing analogy. There is no Laxman in the team who can turn certain defeat into victory. I think an innings defeat stares the UPA in the face.

Do or die

* Shekhar Gupta has rightly raised many questions and answered some. We know Manmohan Singh is an efficient, honest, thoughtful individual. So why has he stopped sharing his ideas and asserting his authority? If he knows these are not acceptable to his party,he should quit and not be a part of the current debacle. If wishes to stand up for his office,he should take his decisions and ask the cabinet to discuss them. Constraints of coalition politics shouldn’t come in the way of decision-making. A PM cannot save his skin by saying: “I am not a party to this decision, ask the concerned minister.” We hope Dr Manmohan Singh,of the calibre of 1991,will come out of his shell and take India ahead.

Another prescription

* In ‘Decide on the Doctor’,Shekhar Gupta has given a good prescription for the ailing Congress. The only problem is,the prescription is short-term,and doesn’t attack the root cause of the disease. The problem with the government and the ruling party is they still don’t agree they are ill,and because of them the country is off-colour. The government’s batsmen and bowlers are faltering like the Indian team in England. However, this isn’t due to injury, but bad captaincy. So here’s my alternative prescription: move Dr Singh to Rashtrapati Bhavan and make Pranab Mukherjee the PM.

Call it an idea?

* Apropos the article ‘Aam admi agent’ (IE,October 3),the suggestions put forward by Sharad Yadav to avert terror attacks seem inconsequential and idle. Apportionment of IB jobs among the general populace isn’t feasible as it will lose the confidentiality necessary of an intelligence exercise.
