* This refers to the editorial ‘Most favoured steps’ (IE,November 4). Pakistan’s grant of the MFN status to India is bold. This decision may have been prompted by its recent falling out with the US and could be an attempt to hedge its equations in the region. Nonetheless,India should grab this opportunity as it will help ease tension. What hatred and vendetta can’t do,trade and cultural exchange can. It’s too early, but let us hope for peace and harmony.

* The fresh petrol price hike will now be complemented with anti-aam admi taxes for meeting the losses of the oil companies. The government appears to be suffering from a dearth of productive solutions to bring equilibrium to the economy, and not pass on its economic woes to the people. Our leaders display their economic acumen with profound talk at global summits, but on the ground our country yearns for the right action against extravagant promises.

Vendetta politics

* The decision of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to convert Chennai’s Anna Centenary Library into a hospital smacks of political brinkmanship. It’s obvious her motives are not altruistic. She is attempting as fast and far as possible to wipe out what may remind people of her rival,M. Karunanidhi. She decided not to use the new Tamil Nadu assembly building, scrapped the Kalaignar Housing Scheme, the Kalaignar Insurance Scheme and made a silly attempt to undo the entire school syllabus. After all the expense of erecting the library,to convert it into a hospital, arguing it will be the largest paediatric hospital in India,is both wasteful and crass. Now that the Madras high court has stayed the shifting of the library, surely, the hospital can be erected elsewhere.

Spot the sports?

* The National Junior Athletics Meet started at Ranchi on October 31 in which young sportspersons from all states are participating. While the vernacular press has extensively covered the event, the national press has not taken much note of it. This omission is unfair to the budding sporting talent of the country.

* Apropos ‘Arms dealer Viktor Bout convicted of terror charges’ (IE,November 4),this report would have been an ordinary news item in India. But it’s important for us from one angle. Bout was convicted after a trial lasting only three weeks. In India, this trial could have taken years to travel that distance. When will we learn that justice delayed is injustice done to both accused and victim?
