Long overdue

It’s good that the Women’s Reservation Bill is set to be introduced in the monsoon session of Parliament (‘It’s complicated’,IE,June 22). Women from all walks of life should participate in governance. Rotational reservation is not recommended by some for electing women representatives. But there doesn’t seem to be a practical solution except the complicated rotational system. This is a must,so that every constituency gets a chance to send its woman representative to the House. It’s really a “complicated” exercise and some fair solution should be found for the true definition of the Women’s Bill. Parliament should fairly decide the issue.

It’s unfortunate that the government and Team Anna failed to arrive at a consensus on the Lokpal bill (‘It will be Team Anna vs Parliament now’,IE,June 22). Why the government doesn’t want to be made answerable still remains a mystery. A Lokpal bill,as recommended by the government, without the issues raised by the civil society members, will be a toothless one. It is unlikely to curb corruption in the corridors of power.

Skill & passion

Too much emphasis on a B.Ed degree needs to be reviewed as argued in the editorial ‘B.Ed blues’ (IE,June 22). A rule which has no chance of being observed is worse than no rule,as it tends to encourage malpractices. With a deficit of trained teachers,it’s practically impossible to adhere to the requirement. Besides, the equation of qualification with knowledge doesn’t always hold good. No amount of training in teaching methodology can yield results unless a person has a passion for teaching and regards it as a noble calling. A short-term training, the right attitude or a proven record of quality teaching should be the criteria to begin with.

Re-building blocks

These are early days, but Mamata Banerjee seems to be doing a lot of things right at the moment (‘Bengal seeks Somnath’s advice on industrialisation’,IE,June 22). The most visible is her lack of hostility to members and mentors of the previous administration. It’s surprising, given the raw deal she always got from the Left Front. She has also begun work on rebuilding Bengal’s brains trust — depleted by the continuous exodus of the last three decades — for instance,by roping in Amartya Sen and Sugata Bose. It’s too early, and things can start going wrong tomorrow. But let’s hope she undoes at least a part of the damage.

Mumbai is fast degenerating. The Maharashtra government and its police are proving totally ineffective in dealing with the situation. The J. Dey murder, the Kurar murder, several cases of child-lifting in Navi Mumbai, all remain unsolved.
