Will the revised education bill deliver? It’s definitely a step in the right direction....

•Will the revised education bill deliver? It’s definitely a step in the right direction; it must be ensured that it doesn’t remain on paper alone. Also,by implementing a direct 25 per cent quota in private schools for disadvantaged children, the government is creating an impediment for itself. Concentration of disadvantaged children will differ from region to region,as will the number of private schools. A better approach will be to vary the number according to the conditions in different parts. Regions can be classified as per availability of schools and numbers of disadvantaged children, percentages can be assigned thereafter. The task may be harder than it is now,but it will ensure better implementation of the right to education.

•‘G-20 hope and prayer’ by Saubhik Chakrabarti (IE,September 22) lucidly explains how international trade helps both trading countries, how economies can maintain their balances and how to rebalance the global economy. Published against the backdrop of the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, the article rightly analyses that when the United States consumes less and exports more, and China consumes more and exports less, and when the dollar is weakened and the renminbi strengthened, the global economy will be rebalanced. Among India’s top trading partners, the US is prominent and China’s top export destinations figure India. Hence, the Reserve Bank must play the right and careful role vis-a-vis the rupee’s foreign exchange rate. The focus should be on increasing trade, and thereby growth.

•The daily road shows and queues at Jaganmohan Reddy’s house display the desperation of the late chief minister’s son and his supporters (‘After YSR’,IE,September 24). Unless the Congress wants to commit political harakiri and confirm an otherwise widely prevalent feeling that the party’s democratic professions are slowly degenerating into dynastic rule,it should not yield to the pressure tactics of a section of its MLAs and ministers. Would someone enlighten the people as to what qualifies Jaganmohan Reddy other than that he is YSR’s son and a new MP? Anyway,Jaganmohan and K.V.P.R. Rao shouldn’t be the arbiters of who the state chief minister is. It is time the “high command” called their bluff.

Good job

•The ISRO team should be congratulated for the successful launch of India’s 16th remote-sensing satellite Oceansat-2 and six nano European satellites in 20 minutes. This launch will herald a new beginning in mapping fishing zones around India, measuring ocean surface wind speeds as well as atmospheric temperature and humidity. It will probe oceans’ role in shaping the earth’s climate and their interaction with the atmosphere. Moreover,it will also help identify fish, predict the onset of monsoons and monitor coastal water pollution. This successful launch has once again proved our space scientists’ capability.
