Law and war

Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has advised the people not to re-elect parliamentarians who oppose the Jan Lokpal Bill. I admire Hazare and his team for effectively raising the issue of corruption, yet I have grave reservations about how a group of people, howsoever wise and upright,is going to any length to impose its particular brand of legislation. India is a democracy. The Constitution lays down the procedures for enacting a law. Hazare has every right to launch a crusade against corruption and run down those who are corrupt or abet corruption and call for their prosecution, but to exhort people not to elect those who oppose his version of the Jan Lokpal Bill is a bit much.

Bad blood

That children suffering from thalassemia got infected with HIV after a blood transfusion in Junagarh is shocking (‘23 thalassemic children test HIV positive in Guj hospital’,IE,September 13). Hospitals and blood banks should follow the basic procedures to ensure that blood is not contaminated, that blood types of the donor and the recipient match. The minimum of precautions could have ensured that these children did not suffer further. We need our government hospitals, which cater to the poorest of the society,to be more careful, more earnest.

Food for thought

While Anna Hazare was fasting,we forgot to pay attention to the food security bill. The tabling of this bill has been postponed from the monsoon session to the winter session of Parliament. Earlier, despite the Supreme Court’s pointer in the direction, the government had failed to ensure the distribution of surplus foodgrains among poor households, even as huge stocks were rotting in godowns. It’s time we revved up our PDS.

Not shining

THE performance of many parties has been dismal since the last general elections,as pointed out in the article ‘Countdown’s begun’ (IE,September 13). The government’s failure to fight terror, corruption and price-rise is obvious. Nothing concrete has been done to reform our political, economic, judicial and police systems. The national parties cannot hope to improve on their 2009 Lok Sabha results unless something miraculous happens.

Coaching disaster?

In addition to the whitewash in the Tests,India has lost the ODIs and the T20 match in England. Is this a coaching debacle? The team, which was successful under Gary Kirsten, has touched a humiliating low under Duncan Fletcher. Perhaps it is not too early to consider a new coach.
