Inaction hero
Defence minister A.K. Antony is not owning responsibility for not taking action against the army chief when he told him about the bribe offer (Told Army Chief to act on bribe,he didnt: Antony,IE,March 28). He is now blaming General V.K. Singh. If the army chief did not act on his advice, what prevented Antony from ordering the inquiry? How can he escape the charge of wilful inaction and indifference for that long?

Defenceless
THE episode of the army chief reporting the bribe offer to the defence minister is a new chapter in the UPA governments tale of inefficiency. Merely being honest is not sufficient to be defence minister of a big state like India. A meaningful defence minister has to be shrewd, practical and extremely alert in order to handle the complexities of his department. Kickbacks in large-scale procurements have been seen in the past. It was probably for his honesty alone that the UPA chose a defence minister like A.K. Antony not for his deep knowledge of defence matters or proven acumen. Antonys emotional disposition and statement in Parliament are not what one expects of a defence minster.

Quality control
THE uproar in Parliament about Team Annas swipe at the quality of our MPs appears to be more a formality than a serious issue. The latest hero in politics,Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, has included the notorious Raja Bhaiyya in his cabinet. The induction of persons with criminal backgrounds needs to be looked into.

Annas arena
APROPOS the editorial Let Anna abuse (IE,March 28),while one would agree that Parliament has far more important matters to discuss than Anna Hazares antics, its also necessary to make these self-proclaimed civil society stalwarts realise they are crossing all limits of decency under the garb of freedom of expression. The government is ruing its double fault now of giving them the parliamentary privilege of drafting the Lokpal bill, and taking Hazare into custody before he could start his fast. So it is doing its penance by being the current victim of Team Annas belligerence.

The editorial,Let Anna abuse, has well advised MPs to take their work seriously instead of blowing their top over Anna Hazares barbs. But had they done their work properly,Hazare would be counting sheep in his village. Unfortunately our politicians credibility is so low that every self-styled crusader is tempted to take a potshot at them. They need to work on their own agenda such touchiness will only expose their venality or vulnerability.
