This refers to the editorial ‘A lot like Deepika’ (IE,October 11). India’s newest hero reminds us of the essence of sport. Like the parents of Deepika, there are thousands of parents who toil to train their wards. If our governments, both Union and state, come forward to take such talents under their wing, the day is not far when we can aspire to win gold medals in the Olympics.

Of course, corporates could also lend a hand in promoting sports other than cricket. I’m certain our sports minister and the CWG Organising Committee will take credit for India’s excellent performance.

However,it’s individual sportspersons and their parents we should be proud of.

Making winners

From a backward state and daughter of an autorickshaw driver,17-year-old Deepika Kumari has proved again that it’s the family and dedicated, professional coaching which discover, nurture and motivate sporting talents in India. One may recall the stories of Saina Nehwal or Sachin Tendulkar. Add to this the contribution of their self-effacing coaches in bringing out the best from them. If only our sports bodies, mostly headed by politicians, were as conscious of their duty of identifying and developing talent India abounds in!

Cabinet crossed

The editorial ‘Damming evidence’ (IE,October 9) has amply pointed out how UPA-II ministers, mostly belonging to the Congress, are acting at cross-purposes and even challenging policy matters decided by the cabinet. They obstruct government schemes and policies on untenable and far-fetched grounds. Such instances have become routine rather than exceptions and are bound to erode the PM’s authority. What’s intriguing and inexplicable is the Congress president’s silence. The party leadership and the executive head need to speak in one voice clearly and unreservedly to prevent their colleagues from derailing projects which are of paramount importance for the development of backward areas.

Scrap it all

Apropos the front page report ‘IPL chucks out Kings XI,Royals’ (IE,October 11),the IPL is “Indian Puppet League” and more skeletons are going to tumble out in the days to come,as the entire format is controversial, sans serious cricket. It’s purely commercial and would destroy cricket and cricketers in the years to come if it continues. Even the expulsion of Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab was illogical, and perhaps a result of the feud between the BCCI and Lalit Modi. Cricket is a national passion in India and leagues like the IPL should be scrapped. Formats like the Ranji Trophy,Deodhar Trophy,Duleep Trophy, etc, which gave cricketers like Gavaskar,Tendulkar,Kapil Dev,etc to the nation, should be rejuvenated as these would immensely improve the game.
