Help at hand

Apropos ‘Minimum wage to maternity leave: Domestic help policy almost home’ (IE,May 7),it is heartening to learn about the first-ever national policy for domestic workers. The government has finally recognised the services of domestic helps. This bill, aimed at protecting their basic rights, will take us closer to fulfilling our dream of women’s empowerment. Its proposals will not only raise their standard of living but will also save them from exploitation.

IN RESPONSE to ‘It is states vs Centre’ (IE,May 7),I’d say that both the Centre and the opposing state governments are equally to blame for the continuing deadlock on the NCTC. Instead of taking a middle course, they are trying to make each other blink first. Mamata Banerjee is opposing the NCTC only to force the government to concede to her demands. Instead of digging in their heels, both need to ponder over the points of contention, rise above party lines and accept what is best for national security. Under no circumstances should the NCTC be allowed to become a victim of their war of attrition.

REGARDING ‘It is states vs Centre’,both should create opportunities to meet each other halfway. If national security is really uppermost on their minds, why can’t they smooth over their differences?

IT IS disheartening to learn that state governments, especially the non-Congress ones, have disagreed on the NCTC. Terrorism has a country-wide network and needs to be fought at many levels. The outright rejection of proposals that are in the national interest, just for political reasons,is condemnable. This proposal should be revived and reviewed.

THIS refers to ‘What’s your caste?’ (IE,May 7). Shivanand Tiwari mentions that the BJP distanced itself from former party president Bangaru Laxman but not from B.S. Yeddyurappa. Bangaru Laxman, unlike Yeddyurappa, has been convicted.

Tailoring history

THIS refers to ‘Coronation Park to be renamed, panel set up to scout for new name’ (IE,May 7). It is amusing that even academics are complicit in “cleansing” our history of references. But we the people are capable of facing historical facts,we understand that acknowledging them does not always mean glorifying them. We prefer knowing history in toto, not one that is tailored to suit an agenda.
