Guiding lights
Shekhar Gupta’s Decide on the doctor (IE,October 1) is founded on a singular insight. The Congress has perforce to rely on old and experienced hands to first see itself through the present term; and second,to be in good stead for the 2014 elections. Gupta so rightly puts a spotlight on Sheila Dikshit. The Congress could do well with a capable prime minister coupled with a sagacious party president.

Notions of loss
THIS refers to A big loss (IE,October 3). Theres some substance to the view that the CAG may have gone overboard in estimating the notional loss in the 2G spectrum scam. One of the main points is whether the policy decision to continue with the first-come-first-serve basis was arrived at following due process. It appears it wasnt, and that provided enough ground for the CAG to smell a rat due to a not-so-transparent,faulty policy decision. Its time government decision-making became transparent.

Audit the auditor
IT was shocking to read that the CAGs refusal to have a response from the DoT on the magnitude of the 2G loss may be the root cause of the corruption controversy. The truth about the 2G scam needs to be brought to light. If its proved that the CAG made a mountain of a molehill by blowing up DG Audit R.P. Singhs report of Rs 2,645 crore loss to Rs 1.76 lakh crore, will action be taken against the CAG?

Afghan options
ITS time we considered the endgame in Afghanistan (Kabul gameplan,IE,October 3). The problem becomes clearer if we look at Afghanistan as two countries: the Pashtun south and the non-Pashtun north. Its unlikely Hamid Karzai can continue after the US withdrawal. The area north of the Hindukush with Hazara,Tajik and Uzbek majorities is where India should concentrate by cooperating with Iran and other contiguous countries. As an IPKF veteran,I remember that the then Indian government had backed the EPRLF party in northern Sri Lanka as a counter to the LTTE. When we vacated our areas, the LTTE took control in a matter of minutes. The same is likely to happen in Kabul when the Americans leave the Taliban, backed by Pakistan, will take over in short order. We shouldnt delude ourselves about the staying power of Karzai and his Afghan National Army.

Plan now
I agree that the BJP has nothing to offer at the moment (Try harder,IE,October 3). Unless it puts its own house in order and comes out with a credible roadmap to solve the countrys major problems it cant be an alternative to the UPA.
