• The government of the aam aadmi has proposed to hike prices of diesel and petrol knowing well that this will result in additional rise in prices of essential commodities. What kind of “general” Budget is this? This is an elite Budget. Now,we’ll eat toys and cell phones. No sooner the UPA has come back in power at the Centre and some states,it has given a free hand to traders and middlemen to commit daylight robbery.

Pakistan’s ploys

• Pakistan has once again used the secretary level talks merely as a forum to vent its spleen. This is similar to what Pervez Musharraf did at Agra. Diplomatic platforms are just being used as means to gain publicity. Strong words coming from a country on the verge of collapse sound comical, and are clearly aimed at diverting attention from Pakistan’s role in breeding extremists.

More than six decades of dialogue have yielded precious little. After 26/11,India had put off all talks till ‘Pakistan took some concrete action’. Till date,no such thing has been done. Then why the talks? If the government of India truly cares for those who have lost near and dear ones to terror it will find both the means and the courage to protect them.

The deep rift

• Indo-Pak diplomatic talks may be necessary to postpone a military option between the two neighbours. However, even though India is ready for peace talks with an open heart,Pakistan’s security perceptions have always remained India-centric. Since Pakistan dare not confront the strong Indian army in a conventional conflict,low-intensity conflict is their alternative.

Rail misadventure

• Bad economics and good politics is a combination destined to fall through. Today, reforms are needed to overhaul Indian railways. But Mamata’s budget is populist — even her idea of the PPP model in the system is doubtful, given her party’s stand on the Singur plant. If this is the way in which crucial positions are leveraged for political purposes, then our governance is doomed. It is people at large who will bear the costs. But Mamata has certainly booked herself a berth to West Bengal.

• This refers to your editorial,‘The 200 club’. Sachin Tendulkar’s double century,a first in the history of one-day internationals, along with his other innumerable records, makes him immortal in the history of cricket. His performance should be viewed in a larger perspective since it provides inspiration to Indians across different walks of life. This country needs its talented citizens to be as dedicated and disciplined as Sachin,in order to realise its full potential.
