Game on

*This refers to ‘Cong snubs Jairam, says Modi poses no challenge’ (IE,June 15). The Congress’s spokesmen have dismissed Jairam Ramesh’s view that Narendra Modi poses a challenge to the UPA. But judging from several media surveys,it is widely believed that Modi’s move to centrestage as the BJP election campaign committee chief is a serious challenge to the ruling alliance. Unless Rahul Gandhi accepts this and comes out with an alternative agenda, the challenger,or as the Congress calls him,the pretender, could run away with the trophy.

*THIS refers to ‘The Iran surprise’ (IE,June 17). Cleric Hassan Rouhani’s election as Iran’s president was an emphatic victory, with him having secured more than 50 per cent of the votes polled. This is great news for liberals everywhere. President Rouhani is considered moderate, and supports true liberty for people. It was mainly the youth of Iran that backed him for his broadminded vision. It seems that, across the world, the youth now plays an important role in political outcomes. We have seen this during the Arab Spring, and also in present-day Turkey. The youth have shunned ultra-conservatism and religion-based politics. They simply want employment and development. This could be a signal for our political parties that good governance is the key; votebank politics isn’t fooling anyone.

*THIS refers to ‘Intelligence failure’ (IE,June 15),with which I entirely agree. The UPA government has pitched the IB against the CBI in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. These two agencies are independent (or at least they should be) and function based on leads they receive from different sources. For its effective functioning, the IB,which has its own informers and channels to get information on different issues, should be allowed to keep its sources confidential. All over the world, such sensitive agencies are granted this privilege. In pitting the CBI against the IB,the Central government has opened a Pandora’s box. Making the revelation of sources necessary will jeopardise the IB’s intelligence gathering capabilities. This will have serious repercussions and is not desirable.

A test in time

* THIS refers to ‘The cost of living’ (IE,June 18). I agree with the proposed plan to screen every Indian for HIV. This would not only reduce the cost of HIV to the economy, through detection and treatment, but it would also help reduce the stigma of testing for HIV. Another good idea is to make it compulsory for every adult about to get married to be tested for HIV. This would help save many people who get infected by their partners.
