PUNJAB Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has requested Pakistans Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo to send a cultural delegation of Pakistani students here as a confidence building measure between the two countries. Well meaning and welcome though this step is,I suggest that the embargo on Pakistans entertainment programmes also be lifted. The winds of change seem to have rendered such restrictions irrelevant.

Stay the course
THIS refers to Mamata turns her back on UPA (IE,September 19). Neither the BJP nor any other UPA ally opposed to the economic reforms is in a position to form an alternative government. No party wants to face mid-term polls either. The Congress should just stay the course and take key decisions through the executive route. Freed from Mamata Banerjees politics,it can now keep the railways ministry within the party. This will allow it to attend to the longstanding security and infrastructure needs of
the railways.

Pass the buck
THIS responds to A wasted sweet spot (IE,September 21). The writers are right in their observation that India failed to push institutional reforms when conditions were conducive to them. The method of giving subsisdies is inconsistent with the pricing policy. We need to move towards a policy regime where the subsidy is a fixed amount and the MRP floats in line with market prices. This will not only help in fiscal prudence but also pass on the costs to the consumers smoothly.

On liberty
THIS refers to Cartoon rage (IE,September 11). Limited liberty is a contradiction in terms. It cannot be limited by law. Liberty must be granted as a whole by the state to its citizens. They must be allowed to express themselves even if it rattles the political masters. Like air and sunshine, liberty cannot be bound in fetters.

Bowled over
THE minnows,Afghanistan, gave India a scare as Dhoni and his team struggled to beat them in the T-20 World Cup match in Sri Lanka (India beat Afghanistan by 23 runs; Yuvraj scalps three,IE,September 19). Our openers struggled on a slow-paced wicket and Virat Kohli saved the day for the team with a well-deserved 50. Indias bowling is struggling in the shorter version of the game and we have to
depend on part-time bowlers like Yuvraj,Raina and others. This could mean disaster against teams like England,Australia and South Africa. Indias batting leaves much to be desired as well. With the exception of Kohli, all the batsmen seem to be struggling at the moment.
