Forward march

* IN THE article ‘The 24th Chief’ (IE,June 2),Shekhar Gupta has delved deep into the stand-off between the army and the ministry of defence. The previous army chief,General V.K. Singh, seems to have raised controversies towards the end of his tenure because he failed to get his date of birth “corrected”,which might have given him one more year in service. But he has also pointed out deficiencies in one of the world’s largest armies. The poor state of the army’s preparedness is cause for concern and must be addressed by the new chief,General Bikram Singh.

* DURING his tenure as the army chief,General V.K. Singh was regarded by most as a man of impeccable honesty, integrity and courage (‘The 24th Chief’). However, when one looks back on the last few months, his record disappoints. This office has been occupied by great men like K.M. Cariappa and Sam Manekshaw. Singh could also have left a shining legacy. But he ended his career looking like a vindictive person for whom personal battles were more important than the morale of the army he headed.

On the defensive

* IN ‘RBI worsens the UPA blow’ (IE,June 2),Surjit S. Bhalla has bluntly accused the UPA’s three top leaders — Sonia Gandhi,Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee — of mismanaging the economy to destruction. Bhalla blames flawed policies, indecision and misgovernance by the UPA government for the plight of the economy. The government now seems to be on the defensive. The prime minister, known for his silence at critical times, recently spoke up,rubbishing Team Anna’s charges of arbitrary allocation of coal blocks.

Slippery issue

* IN THIS government, the left hand does not seem to know what the right hand is doing. When the prices soared and the country reacted violently, the government seemed to be at sea. Minister Jaipal Reddy cut short his foreign tour to explain why the price shot up The raise and rollback of prices are going on. But who is in control of the prices — oil companies or the government?

* APROPOS ‘Who’s the leader?’ (IE,June 2),what L.K. Advani has said in his blog is nothing new. The party is going through uncertain times. It is too fragmented to knock out even a tottering Congress. With every other BJP-ruled state knotted in controversy,Gujarat is the BJP’s only citadel of strength. A loss or even a poor show in the Gujarat elections could make the BJP electorally weak for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
