• Shekhar Gupta’s balanced advice to the country’s leadership on Naxalism needs due attention and application. No doubt the situation is scary, yet one need neither quit nor exaggerate the threat, though we should also not trivialise the Maoist menace. It’s time to assess the challenge in a sane and practical manner and devise policy to tackle it with skill and patience. Since their aim is to destroy the Indian state,we need an extra dose of resoluteness to nip the evil utilising all options available to the political administration, keeping always in mind that it’s not the first time that India has faced such a challenge. The nation has already overcome much bigger and more dangerous hurdles.

Act sensibly

• A very serious issue has been raised regarding the discussion of tactics in media on operations against insurgents. Such discussions help none but our adversaries. Details and execution of operations must remain confidential to avoid damage to men and material. It’s against journalistic ethics to reveal any plans which may affect or weaken national security. The armed forces should also restrict their statements accordingly, keeping in view the morale of personnel. The example of the media coverage of 26/11 must be kept in mind. On this sensitive matter, all concerned must act sensibly.

Embarrassing blabber

• This refers to the editorial ‘Away from the glare’. There’s nothing wrong in bureaucrats and military officers speaking,of course discreetly,on national matters; more so when they concern the security of the country. But they should not speak for others and out of turn. Generally, they are ready to pontificate on any subject just to earn brownie points. They will not mind to put in their twopence worth even if their blabber causes embarrassment to the government at a later stage. But this happens when the government itself is dumbfounded by unexpected events.

No quitting

• The prime minister has rightly rejected the Union home minister’s offer to resign. Quitting wouldn’t have been the answer to the Dantewada massacre. If P. Chidambaram really takes the responsibility,he should act tough and efficiently. He should take the initiative and all political parties on board to find solutions to the Naxalite problem. This is the time the government should show its strength. The way Maoists are killing innocent citizens or security personnel, there’s no difference between them and the likes of the Taliban,or the LTTE. There are two ways to improve the situation. On one hand, arms should be used to destroy terrorists. On the other, tribal areas should be developed, and their education, health, etc taken care of.
