Fearless symmetry

What the National Tiger Conservation Authority did is commendable but it is important for us to use these statistics as a guiding light for our future projects. We need to be more focused on the broader objective, that is,to protect tigers and ensure that their numbers increase. There should be more accountability and transparency about the funds provided by the government for this purpose. People residing near tiger habitats should be involved in this campaign. They can be of help in tackling the menace of poaching, and their contribution can be incentivised. Forest guards should also be given incentives so that they don’t indulge in malpractice.

This refers to ‘A fateful year that still is’ (IE,March 31). India,Pakistan and Bangladesh must understand that their interests are not always antagonistic. In fact, they need to have a sound and collective political ideology so that the subcontinent develops and progresses as a whole. The haunting memories of the past should be shelved in the face of new sociopolitical and geopolitical scenarios. Else,it will be always a fertile ground for other powers to meddle in,thus diverting our attention and resources from the real problems we face.

Mohali spirit

India’s win over Pakistan in Mohali had the nation jubilant, but what is more heartening was the birth of the “Mohali spirit”. An India-Pakistan cricket match was played without acrimony or hatred. Both teams played hard,in the spirit of the game. The arrival of Yousaf Raza Gilani and fans from across the border is a very healthy sign for Indo-Pak relations. This cordial environment should be made durable. This should also reduce mutual distrust and enable addressing our outstanding issues. Let the Mohali spirit not die.

Booking the book

Banning a book is futile and counterproductive. The government made a knee-jerk reaction when it said it would contemplate bringing in a law to make insulting Gandhi a criminal offence. There should be freedom of expression — and no opinion should be gagged. Not only should Joseph Lelyveld’s book on Gandhi not be banned, but the existing ban on all books should be lifted. The contents of this book may be offensive to some. Instead of banning it,their authenticity should be investigated by those who object to them.
