Opinion Drawing lines

Poverty is a matter of perception and the number depends on where you draw the line. Each line has its own agenda.

I write with reference to the article ‘My data versus yours’ by M.K. Venu (IE,September 9). Poverty is a matter of perception and the number depends on where you draw the line. Each line has its own agenda. Recall the story of the boy in an exclusive school who was asked to write a story on “A Poor Family”.The boy wrote — “Once upon a time there was a poor family. Everybody was poor. The father was poor, the mother was poor, the children were poor, the butler was poor, the maids were poor, the gardener was poor, the drivers were poor, and the watchmen were poor…”

No jaw-jaw

Apropos ‘Chasing a consensus’ (IE,September 17) by K. Subrahmanyam, the real problems in Kashmir are not popular grievance,

AFSPA,autonomy, etc, but the problem of the separatists. New Delhi is grossly mistaken in thinking that a settlement with the separatists can be reached within the framework of the Indian Constitution. New Delhi’s liberal policies towards them have resulted in this state of anarchy and violence that has now gone on for three months. In the all-party meet,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that at least part of the violence was deliberately orchestrated. Is “dialogue” the way to deal with those challenging the sovereignty of the Indian state?

Welcome camaraderie

This refers to your news report ‘Under fire,Omar gets a Rahul cover’ (IE,September 17). When the chips are down for the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister,Omar Abdullah, these encouraging words from unexpected quarters must have helped. Gandhi has said that he is “young and requires some time”. The fact that they belong to the same generation and share a wavelength helps with political understanding, and could defuse the crisis.

Manners,minister

Apropos your editorial ‘Tough shove’ (IE,September 16),what a shame that our sports minister rudely asked the coach Satpal to “stay away” from a photograph with Sushil Kumar, the Indian wrestler who won a gold medal in Moscow. This attitude was on display earlier with Saina Nehwal’s coach and former badminton champion,P. Gopichand. As Union sports minister,it is strange that M.S. Gill does not recognise the gurus who teach and groom our sportspersons. He should seek to inspire our sporting community, not disrespect them.

Balancing rates

RBI has hiked key rates like the repo rate, reverse repo rate, etc,to control spiralling inflation. But on the other hand, the government has hiked Central government employees’ salaries by 10 per cent with effect from July 1,and state government employees will also inevitably ask for an equivalent hike. Will this not cause further inflation?

On the other hand, there is a 1 per cent hike in interest on Provident Fund accumulations, but no increase in the interest rate on the monthly income schemes in the post offices where small investors put their money.
