It is unfortunate that Khobragade was handcuffed at the time of her arrest.

* This refers to ‘India may seek parity for US mission staff’ (IE,December 16). The fact that Devyani Khobragade broke US law — by not paying her employee minimum wages and lying on a visa application — cannot be overlooked or denied. It is unfortunate that Khobragade was handcuffed at the time of her arrest. She might have taken good care of her employee. But that doesn’t mean she didn’t break the law. The whole affair is a stark warning to all Indians settled abroad — tread very carefully on employment issues. Many people accustomed to treating their domestic employees in a distinctly feudal way in India can get into serious trouble if they don’t respect the labour laws and norms of foreign countries. They always have the option of not hiring domestic help.

Jolted to act

* This refers to ‘When I tried to move away,he kissed my arm, repeated he loved me… Asked me to share room’ (IE,December 16). Well done for carrying an account of the sequence of events as narrated by the complainant of alleged sexual harassment at the hands of a retired Supreme Court judge and current chairman of a state human rights commission. Although some people will undoubtedly question the wisdom of carrying Indira Jaising’s bold piece,I do not. This was needed to jolt the conscience of people in government to act. It is,of course,of utmost importance that the name and identity of the complainant be protected at all costs.

Now govern

* This refers to ‘Compromise is no crime’ by Sanjaya Baru (IE,December 16). In spite of being the single largest party in the Delhi assembly, the BJP is unable to form government because no one has openly offered it the support that it needs. Arvind Kejriwal should seriously try to form the government and fulfil his manifesto agenda. If he faces difficulties because of the MLAs who give him outside support,he can quit on moral grounds. But if he does not take charge, people will label him a shirker who is afraid of forming government and implementing his ambitious promises. The country can do without the political uncertainty too.

Being nosy

* This refers to ‘Being regressive’ (IE,December 16). People don’t need moral guidance on whom to love,or on what is “natural” from the BJP,the state or the court. Let the UPA take the progressive step of amending the IPC. It’s the right thing to do.
