• This refers to ‘Proposal to limit IIT entry…’. The decision that calls for more “weightage” to Class XII exams is a welcome decision,if only for its effect on coaching centers. Those have made formal school education and the system irrelevant and students are often mere parrots. However,a counter-argument can be that the extra burden on students favours only the brainier ones. One does question the slightly erratic policy: if Kapil Sibal wants to do away with board exams and introduce a grade system, how does this fit into his last policy? Students will undoubtedly be puzzled.

India too

• One could argue that Suresh Kalmadi’s dissatisfaction with Mike Hooper could be due to his desire to hide the country’s unpreparedness for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This worry has in the past been echoed from sections of the political leadership and the media. It should be remembered that organising international sports events is an opportunity for a nation to highlight its socio-economic,cultural and political progress. Other Asian countries have pulled it off and India should be no exception.

• The IIMs question should not be structured simply on benefiting whom for what, but rather about the great issue of autonomy of the institutions. Such institutions have a golden history in Indian education and now have the privilege of being recognised abroad. This should be an autonomous decision as it can be argued that IIMs thrive because of minimal government interference in their operations.

• This refers to ‘Battlelines: Fennell rejects Kalmadi’s…’. People responsible for managing the Commonwealth Games in Delhi are displaying lack of sportsmanship amongst themselves. This is unfortunate. There have been delays in certain arrangements and rather than playing the blame game it would be better for the concerned to take on board guidance from the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Yet again?

• This refers to ‘Killing of commanders’,. The suicide bomb attack on Iran’s revolutionary elite guards by Sunni Jundallah extremists indicates that outfits in Pakistan continue to be keen in spreading terrorism. Further,it is not uncommon for Pakistan to deny allegations despite evidence and proof.
