Shekhar Gupta’s lament in ‘Our harmed forces’ (IE,January 16) is perfectly understandable. In India, the only part of government the citizenry looks up to is the armed forces. Therefore, when any wrongdoing related to the armed forces comes to light it’s bound to cause worry. Corruption and inefficiency are acceptable with a pinch of salt with respect to others, but soldiers are supposed to remain virtuous despite being surrounded by immorality and decadence all around. Are they not human beings?

Whatever be the facts of the Sukna case, the armed forces continue to maintain very high standards though some decline is bound to set in given the overall decay in standards of polity. The situation can be understood from Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America: “when a military spirit forsakes a people, the profession of arms ceases to be held in honour, and soldiers fall to the lowest rank of public servants — they are little esteemed and no longer understood. Hence arises a circle of cause and consequence from which it is difficult to escape.”

Don’t withdraw yet

THIS refers to ‘Too early to signal an exit’ (IE,January 18). The Indian government must follow Keynes at least till the growth momentum gathers strength. Impressive growth in IIP in capital goods sector will further strengthen the economy through developing the manufacturing sector in future. Good news from

Infosys — and IT sector — will boost the economy. If the RBI can manage the situation, along with the agricultural and commerce ministries, growth will increase the output, which can then increase supply and result in declining prices. Ila Patnaik rightly suggested that there’s no need to withdraw the stimulus till all is well.

Unfit for status

Deemed universities were feasibly the last citadel of trust for the continuity of English as a “first” language (‘Deemed not to be’,IE,January 20). It’s enriching to note that those in power have now opened their eyes to the gross mishandling of authority to award the status. The problem is not whether the “universities” are deemed or not. But the lack of quality in most Indian universities is the distressing factor. It’s also disappointing to note the courses many of these institutions offer. The Supreme Court had to intervene and direct the government. The haphazard approvals granted to institutions set to lose the status should also be investigated.

Missing them

IPL franchisees overlooking Pakistani players is contemptible. Before short-listing their names,IPL organisers should have consulted with the franchisees about their participation. It’s certain that cricket fans in India will miss the Pakistani players.
