I very much doubt that will happen. The BJP,already a house divided, will effectively be signing its own death warrant by projecting Modi as its prime ministerial candidate for the forthcoming general elections. As it is,the NDA is but a shadow of its former self. Modi does not have the steel to carry this country or the NDA forward. I believe he has no credibility, especially given his statement that he does not aspire to be PM and that he desires only to serve his state till 2017. Even though I disagree with Gupta,I must say his instincts are right. But in this instance, perhaps, his political vision is a little blurry.

* Shekhar Gupta is right that Modi will be declared the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate soon enough. The Congress, beleaguered by its government’s mega scams,is depending on Modi to change its electoral fortunes. The Congress is not going into the upcoming elections with either a positive agenda or a leader who can take Modi on. Stunned by Modi’s all-India acceptance, they are going to rely on a negative campaign based on maligning Modi and creating an atmosphere of fear. Unfortunately, however hard the Congress tries, the 2014 election is going to be a Modi vs Rahul contest, not a Modi vs no-Modi contest. And that is,or should be,worrisome for the Congress.

Passing the buck

* This refers to ‘Dangerous experiments’ (IE,September 9). There is no denying or confirming whether the Muzaffarnagar violence was stoked by certain political parties, but it is the supreme responsibility of the state government to anticipate and control riots. The government’s tendency to abdicate from the responsibilities that rest with it,by passing the buck to the BJP,shows it in a poor light.

* To all those who were apprehensive about Parliament not functioning, our politicians have given a resounding reply by passing a number of landmark bills. People may still label some of the bills as “reckless”,“populist” and “election gimmicks”,but leaving our prejudices aside,it is heartening to see our parliamentarians act on key developmental issues. Parliament has finally responded to our pleas that it should function.
