Cool response

As the world celebrated Environment Day on June 5,concerns about the rapidly deteriorating environment were raised again. It is worrying that such events do not transcend the celebration and the speeches. This month’s conference at Rio de Janeiro will demonstrate how far we have come since the Earth Summit of 1992,in the same city. Years after Rio,1992,the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 and the Durban Conference in 2011,we still have not been able to change the mindset of most countries on environment. Every country,in its bid for development, has shifted responsibility to other countries. Meanwhile, the environment has suffered.

EVERY other day we read laments on the deteriorating state of the Indian economy,as well as prescriptions for how Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should revive it (‘Disunion cabinet’,IE June 8). But then, why should we be surprised about this sorry state of affairs? During his tenure as finance minister, inflation in India had hit astronomical levels. Little wonder that during his stint as prime minister, inflation should be restored to its glory days again.

Flight of fancy?

APROPOS ‘Sukhoi sorties: A year on,IAF still waits for Tendulkar,Dhoni to pad up’ (IE,June 7),newly sworn-in MP Sachin Tendulkar is also an honorary group captain of the Indian Air Force but has not yet fulfilled his commitment to it. M.S. Dhoni, who was conferred the title of honorary lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army, has proved to be more proactive in this role. Soon after the IPL finished,Dhoni visited the LoC,meeting the officers and jawans there. Tendulkar could only spare time for taking oath as as MP.

Choosing well

I AGREE with ‘Intelligent design’ (IE,June 7). The opposition leaders’ suggestion of a collegium representing government, opposition and the judiciary for appointing the CEC is worth considering. The government should not reject the idea just because it came from the opposition. The appointment of the CEC by the collegium will spare the incumbent the tag of being the favourite of the ruling party and thereby add to the sanctity of the office.

THE report ‘Khurshid downplays Advani’s demand to set up collegium’ (IE,June 7) exposes the Congress’s tendency of blaming everything on the NDA’s rule. It shows the impartiality and credibility of constitutional institutions is not the Congress’s concern. The DMK and the Left support L.K. Advani’s demand for a broader collegium to make appointments for constitutional posts. Such jobs should be given to persons of impeccable integrity who enjoy the confidence not only of the government but also of the opposition.
