Cold & blue
* Apropos the editorial Winter session blues (IE,November 11),the depreciation of the rupee only indicates the retardation of our economic growth. The governments inertia, dithering and indecision and the UPAs approach to policy are responsible for the slowing down. On the other hand, people want instant solutions to their problems, such as price rise. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, therefore, has to prove his mettle and run a tight ship so that the winter session of Parliament does not prove to be another damp squib.

Welcome words
* The generous compliment from the Indian prime minister to his Pakistani counterpart is appreciated (Gilani a man of peace, time for new chapter in ties: PM,IE,November 11). Positive articulations such as this cannot obstruct confidence-building measures. However,Pakistan has often harmed its own credibility. Now is a good time to encourage such gestures for bilateral relations. Let us hope Gilani will live up to the expectations of peace against the odds.

Never again
* The door to the delivery of justice in the post-Godhra riots cases has at last been opened (Path to justice,IE,November 11). The survivors will perhaps never be able to erase the memory of what befell them and their loved ones. Yet,every one of us could help in softening the sharpness of their agony by vowing never to allow ourselves to be roused to hatred and violence.

Short attendance
* This refers to the editorial Do the math (IE,November 9). The aim at the early primary level in school is a general command over reading, writing and arithmetic. If thats not achieved, its a colossal waste of money. Besides, strict control is needed to ensure teachers regular presence in classrooms. They should be made accountable if results are poor.

Practical class
* This refers to Pratap Bhanu Mehtas The education wars (IE,November 10). Rabindranath Tagore was of the view that education means a burden to students, not a vehicle through which they looked ahead. This is a matter of attitude. Our education system divides professions on the basis of social history and the question of dignity. An educated person generally treats agriculture or,say, newspaper vending as a low-grade profession. They seldom realise there is an open, free world of innovation, skill and merit where a premium is put on the quality of work. A less educated technician at a car workshop may earn more through his practical knowledge than a better educated person.
