Behave yourself

* This refers to ‘BJP’s floor test’ (IE,October 23). The party did not do itself any favours by ensuring that the monsoon session was a washout. Instead of working as a reactive opposition, the BJP should take active steps to win the confidence of the people as a credible alternative to the Congress prior to the 2014 general elections. It can ill afford to appear purely opportunistic,as it has unwittingly portrayed itself thus far. It should behave responsibly inside as well as outside Parliament.

Backed-up bill

* It IS disappointing to learn that the much talked about land acquisition bill has still not been passed (‘Act together’,IE,October 22). It is also shameful that the bill is being delayed due to disagreement within the UPA itself, and is unlikely to be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. The article correctly points out that “Irrespective of any future shows of support from the Congress, the damage to the bill has been inflicted,as industry and states will be reluctant to accept provisions that do not have the full backing of the government”. Rules in the new land acquisition bill must be made tougher so that no land in the country is misused and no one is harassed or cheated in land transactions.

Empty growth

* ‘Earth calling’ (IE,October 22) makes the sensible point that sustainability and growth must not be pitted in opposition to each other. Addressing environmental and developmental concerns is not a zero-sum game. The filth, pollution and decaying infrastructure that characterise high growth enclaves across the country are evidence of how utterly false and inequitable India’s growth has been. If India’s growth is to have any real meaning, every citizen must first have access to basic necessities that enable a life of dignity. Clean drinking water, toilets, primary health care, good schools and shelter are still unavailable to hundreds of millions, including the urban middle classes. Until these essential services are available to all,our glittering commercial complexes, malls and tall buildings will remain signifiers of our politicians’ empty promises.

On the bright side

* THE excellent article ‘1962,a different story’ (IE,October 20) strikes a positive note amidst the gloom of the 50th anniversary of the crushing defeat in NEFA. Just a little correction here. The unit whose soldiers,21 of them, created history at Saragarhi was 4 Sikh (then 36th Sikhs) and not the equally distinguished 1st Sikh (now 4 Mech).
