Active speech
The article Our Scissorland (IE,January 19) exposes our political classs pretext to throttle the right to freedom of speech to safeguard its own vested interests. Our political parties use the cultural sensitivity card very often to suppress the freedom of speech. They should instead be invested in promoting peoples fundamental rights.

Cut it out
THE article Our Scissorland (IE,January 19) was apt and informative. Since the media is considered a mirror to society,it should not be censored. The Internet has been a helpful source of information. Though there can be some irritating stuff on some websites,it is also a fact of our times. There may be elements that may be hurtful to some but no one has the right to impose censorship on the ground that these hurt the sentiments of some sections of society.

New thinking
INNOVATIVE initiatives like the Education City of Dantewada (Naxal heartland Dantewada gets a new address: Education City,IE,January 19) are noteworthy for taking up the challenge of teaching and learning even in the most hostile environment and imparting quality education against all odds. Outcomes in learning,in Dantewada and elsewhere, must be of a high order and strategies in implementation must be tweaked to suit local requirements for better results.

Your honour
AGAINST the backdrop of the report Pranab assured Army Chief of a face-saving exit (IE,January 19),it is surprising that the stalemate is continuing on the issue of General V.K. Singhs age. He seemed to have been open to the idea of stepping down. His only insistence was that before he quit in May,the government accept his birth year as 1951 as noted in his matriculation certificate to underline his honour and integrity in the matter. Since both sides had agreed to an honourable solution, what went wrong? Is it another example of confusion and indecision of the ruling dispensation?

Flightless
Apropos GoM approves 49% FDI in aviation (IE,January 18),this confirms the obsession of the UPA government with FDI as the only solution for any ailing industry. The airlines are to be blamed for their problems. In their race for popularity, they cut fares, expanded routes thoughtlessly, acquired and merged at high prices and poached staff of competitors at big salaries. Public-sector banks liberally gave them loans and now the government wants to give them a helping hand. The foreign airlines are better managed and may not invest in our sinking aviation industry as a minor partner.
