Football Fans Killed
Lightning killed six person and injured at least 66, in the Calcutta maidan area and Dum Dum in 24-Parganas district. Five of the dead and all the injured were football fans who were passing through the Calcutta maidan braving a cloudburst. They were on their way to witness a charity match between Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting on the former’s ground.
Film Awards
Swarna Kamal, the highest national award in films, was awarded to Chomona Dudi, a Kannada film directed by B.V. Karanth, which also received the awards for the best actor (M.V. Vasudeva Rao) and best story (Shivarama Karanth). The best actress award went to Sharmila Tagore for her performance in Mausam, which was also given the second best feature film award. Shyam Bengal’s Nishanth, Malayalam filmmaker K.G. George’s Swapnadanam, K. Balachander’s Tamil film, Apoorva Ragangal, G.V. Iyer’s Kannada film, Hamsa Geethe, Jabbar Patel’s Marathi film, Samna, Abdul Majeed’s Assamese film, Chameli Memsaab, and Bau’s Telugu film, Muthyala Muggu, were declared the best films in the respective languages. M. Balamurali Krishna and Vani Jayaram were adjudged the best male and female playback singers.
NAM Declaration
India presented a draft declaration for consideration of the ministerial conference of non-aligned countries on press agencies pool. The declaration highlights the need for “decolonisation of information” and emphasis that the establishment of a new international order for information is as necessary as the new international economic order.

Centuries by Gordon Greenidge and Viv Richards took the West Indies closer to victory on the third day of the third cricket Test at Old Trafford. England were left an imposing 552 runs to chase.
